Aranjuez is a city with the category Royal Site, located 50 km from
the capital in the extreme south of the Comunidad de Madrid. It is
at the intersection of the Tagus and Jarama rivers and is a fertile,
green place in the middle of the Castilian moors. It has come to be
recognized for its famed products such as strawberries and asparagus.
This
incomparable site was already noticed by the Catholic Kings (Ferdinand
and Isabel), who converted it into a place of rest and relaxation.
It was in this era that it received the 'title' of Royal Site. The
successive monarchs beautified the area with Palaces and Gardens,
reaching its maximum splendor as a place of recreation during the
reign of Carlos IV.
Later
on, the combination of nature and monument that were integrated
in the city served as inspiration to artists or musicians such as
Santiago Rusiñol or Jaoquin Rodrigo. To the latter, the city
owes its international publicity for his Concert of Aranjuez.
